Malaysia’s two main Scrabble Associations have converged once again to take another step forward in pursuing the ultimate goal – spreading the Scrabble germs around and putting Malaysia on the Scrabbling world map. The communion of the Malaysian Scrabble Association and Penang Scrabble Club has yielded a spanking new official website for our local Scrabble scene . The website, PENSTER, has recently undergone a makeover and is now home to the newly calculated official ratings.Details concerning MSA –sanctioned local tourneys as well as overseas ones will be updated frequently.

The PSC Mini Scrabble Tournament, held in conjunction with PSC’s AGM 2007 on 14th of January, saw 24 Penangites congregate at the City Bayview hotel to partake in 7 rounds of wordplay. A few years ago, these numbers would have barely touched 10, even more so for such minis. This is a testament to the small but steadily growing Scrabble community here. In Division A , for those rated above 1000, Aaron Chong and Ong Suanne lost a game each to each other. But, Aaron consistently accumulated king-sized spreads while Suanne scraped through by humbler margins , therefore contributing to his claiming the title based on spread. Some of the more illustrious bingos played by the duo include MASTODON, KNOCKOUT, RANARIUM and UNBIDDEN.

In the below 1000 category, H’ng Hsieh Zhen proved her mettle, fending off Hamid Khan schoolboy Ang Lye Boon in a nail-biting cruncher in the last game after losing to Lye Boon earlier in the day. However, Lye Boon was gracious in accepting his 1-point loss, although he realised that he would have won had he not incurred the penalty of the 5 –point challenge. Amery Seow pipped Lye Boon to second place after winning her last game. We look forward to welcoming Hsieh Zhen into Division A in the near future, a vital stepping stone for continuous progress. Meanwhile, Dr. Adele Tan was unanimously elected as the new President in the AGM.
